Lead Like an Athlete: The Discipline and Energy Strategy of High Performing Leaders
Feb 19, 2025A few months ago, I had a wake-up call about leadership and energy.
I wasn’t at the gym. I wasn’t on a long hike. But according to my Oura ring, my body thought I had been in a workout for eight hours straight.
What was I actually doing?
I was leading a Mindfulness Offsite for Executives.
For an entire day, I facilitated discussions, held space for deep conversations, and guided leaders through reflection and strategy. It was mentally and emotionally intense—but what shocked me most was the physical impact.
• My heart rate remained elevated for hours.
• My body registered sustained exertion, like an intense workout.
• My energy demand was high, even without much physical movement.
This experience made me realize something I had always known but never felt so clearly:
👉 Leadership is a full-body sport.
We don’t just sit in meetings or make decisions. We expend energy—physically, mentally, and emotionally—every single day.
Yet most leaders don’t think of themselves as performers in the same way that athletes do. We push ourselves to the limit, often without the recovery strategies that elite performers rely on.
Leaders Need the Same Discipline as Athletes
Athletes don’t just show up on game day and expect to perform at their peak. They train, recover, and optimize their energy so they can sustain high performance over time.
As leaders, we need to do the same. But we have an added responsibility: We don’t just take care of ourselves—we take care of others.
Every conversation, decision, and challenge we face requires focus and stamina—not just for our own success, but for the success of our teams. If we burn out, we don’t just impact ourselves. We impact everyone around us.
So the question is: Are you treating yourself like an athlete?
If you want to lead at a high level and sustain it, here’s what needs to be part of your strategy.
The High-Performance Playbook for Leaders
1️⃣ Protect Your Energy
Elite athletes don’t train endlessly—they build in recovery to maximize output. High-performing leaders must do the same. Prioritizing sleep, rest, and movement isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity.
If you’re constantly exhausted, your ability to think clearly, make decisions, and support your team will suffer. Instead of pushing through, treat recovery as a performance tool.
2️⃣ Don’t Rely on Motivation—Build Systems Instead
Athletes don’t wake up every day feeling motivated to train. They follow a plan, no matter how they feel. Great leaders do the same.
Routines, habits, and clear priorities create consistency—so even when motivation fades, you stay on track. Success isn’t about willpower. It’s about discipline.
3️⃣ Take Breaks Before You Need Them
One of the biggest mistakes leaders make is waiting until they’re overwhelmed to pause. Burnout isn’t a badge of honor—it’s a sign of poor energy management.
The best leaders proactively build in small resets throughout the day. A short walk, a moment of mindfulness, or even just five minutes of deep breathing can make a massive difference in your ability to stay focused and effective.
4️⃣ Lead with Clarity
Athletes don’t train aimlessly. They have a clear goal driving them forward. High performers in leadership are the same.
Without a compelling why, leadership becomes exhausting. When you have clarity on your purpose, your energy fuels your vision—and that energy inspires those around you.
5️⃣ Get Support—No One Does It Alone
Every elite athlete has a coach. Every top performer has a mentor, advisor, or guide. Yet many leaders think they have to figure it all out on their own.
High performance leadership isn’t just about working hard—it’s about getting the right support to elevate your game. Coaching, mentorship, and accountability accelerate your growth and prevent unnecessary struggles.
Your Energy Is Your Greatest Asset
If you are leading at a high level—driving results, making an impact, and carrying the weight of decisions every day—your energy is your most valuable resource.
But energy isn’t unlimited. It must be protected, cultivated, and sustained.
This is why I do what I do.
As a High Performance Coach, I help ambitious professionals and executives elevate their energy, performance, and leadership—so they can thrive with clarity, confidence, and impact.
Because success isn’t about how hard you work—it’s about how well you sustain it.
